World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 annually. Beginning in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign to raise awareness on environmental issues ranging from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. More than 143 countries participate each year in the event with different themes.

World Environment Day History

World Environment Day is widely celebrated in more than 143 countries. The World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, resulting from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment for encouraging awareness and action to protect our environment. In the year 1974, the first World Environment Day was held with the theme “Only One Earth”.

The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is focused on ‘time for nature’ and providing the essential infrastructure that supports life on Earth and human development.

The idea of different countries hosting World Environment Day began in 1987. World Environment Day is hosted by a different country, in which official celebrations take place. This year World Environment Day is hosted by Colombia in partnership with Germany. By this year, millions of people will be celebrating digitally due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
