  • 1878: Doctor Charles Drysdale wrote an article informing him of the damage caused by tobacco for the first time.
  • 1924: Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the 10th Prime Minister of the country, was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
  • 1962: Soviet Union conducts nuclear test in Novaya Gemalya region.
  • 1968: 42 Dalits are burned alive in Kilavenmani village, Tamil Nadu, India, a retaliation for a campaign for higher wages by Dalit labourers
  • 1972: The last Governor General of India Chakravarti Rajagopalachari died in Madras (now Chennai), the capital of Tamil Nadu.
  • 1972: England beat India by six wickets in the 1st Cricket Test in Delhi
