May 23 History

May is the fifth month of the year in our modern-day Gregorian calendar. In older versions of the ancient Roman calendar, May was the third month of the year. It became the fifth month when January and February were added to the calendar.

According to Gregory calendar, the day number 365 in a year and if it is a leap year then the day number is 366. May 23 has its own special significance in India and world history.

There are 31 days in May and it does not start or end on the same day of the week as any other month.

  • 1592: Giordano Bruno was arrested in Vienna. Because they believed that the earth revolves around the sun, not that the sun revolves around the earth. His belief was considered anti-religion.
  • 1706: John Churchill (Prince of Marlborough) defeats France, killing 17,000 people.
  • 1707: Volcano eruption begins in Santorini Caldera.
  • 1848: Birth of Lilianthal. He taught humans to fly for the first time. His flight made a revolution.
  • 1879: Oxford author Ivan Turgenef received a doctorate in civil law by Oxford University. He was the first writer in the world to be given this honor.
  • 1904: The first wrestling world championship was held in Vienna.
  • 1915: Italy declared war against Austria, Hungary and Germany during World War I.
  • 1949: West Germany formally came into existence after adopting the constitution.
  • 1984: Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to conquer Everest, the world’s highest peak.
  • 1985: A sterile woman gave birth to seven children after treatment. Only three of these newborns survived, but all three were not well. This first major attempt to give birth to test tube babies was unsuccessful.
  • 1999: Johannes Rau appointed as new President of Federal Germany.
  • 2004: 250 drowned due to boat sinking in Meghna River due to storm in Bangladesh.
  • 2010: Supreme Court of India did not consider it a crime for women and men to live together without marrying.
